Weddings are ruled by traditions and weddings in Goa are not exceptions. The western influence can be seen in its culture on the other hand Goa wedding traditions are still evident in most of the wedding ceremonies.
The state with a predominately Christian population is host to a number of Christian weddings taking place round the year. Right from the Beginning of the wedding ceremony to completion of the wedding everything is marked by the wedding rituals. You can smell its essence in the pre nuptials rituals like chuddo and ross to devkarya and saddo. These traditions add colour to this auspicious moment. The Goan Catholic weddings begin with Utor a pre wedding ceremony that marks the beginning of marriage. This ceremony triggers the process of nuptials. Utor is a promise to get married. The next tradition is engagement ceremony where bride and groom exchange rings. This ceremony performed at the bride's place. As the day of marriage approaches the bride and grooms family go to shop fabric for the bridal gown then it is handed over to the tailor. The saddo and clothing to wear by the bride on the day of wedding are purchased. The next Goa wedding tradition is Civil Registration at the office of Civil Registrars as it is essential according to the Portuguese Civil Code. Chudo is the next ceremony performed on the day of first bann when bride had to wear chuddo. The other Goan tradition performed during wedding are Ross and Bicareanchem jevonn when the lunch is offered to beggars in the memory of departed souls to seek their blessings.
